The Mission of the Montpelier Fire and Ambulance Department is to save lives, protect property, and preserve the tax base in the City of Montpelier at a reasonable and acceptable cost to the taxpayer. It is the vision of the Department that Montpelier will be a safe community for people to live in, work in and visit, and a community where people will know their possessions and property will be protected from unnecessary loss or damage. This vision focuses on making Montpelier a "Fire Safe City" and providing Emergency Medical Services.

Fire Safety is attained through a combination of prevention activities reducing the number of fires and rapidly controlling any fires that occur. Despite the Department's efforts to prevent fires, some fires will always occur because of human error and mechanical breakdown. The quickest, safest, and most cost effective method of fire extinguishment is a properly installed, working fire sprinkler system supported by a rapid response of firefighters.

In 2004, in a proactive Life Safety Statement, the Montpelier City Council supported our mission statement by adopting a mandatory Fire Sprinkler Ordinance for all new construction. This will have a significant positive effect for the future of this historic community. Implementing this new ordinance over the next few years will require the cooperation and understanding of citizens and developers. There are now a number of buildings where the inhabitants are protected from tragic loss. The tragic fire in Barre City was a reminder how quickly the contents of our homes burn and how dangerous those fires are. As we work out the process of designing and installing sprinkler systems we will see long-term positive results. The result will be a major step forward toward the Vision of a "Fire Safe City".

Full-time personnel support the prevention activities and provide the initial response to emergency incidents as they occur. The response to alarms is augmented as necessary by part-time personnel, call force, and off duty personnel. Mutual aid, both fire and ambulance, is an important part of our protection strategy. The City depends on others' help when major situations and multiple calls occur. In return, the City provides assistance to neighboring communities.

The Department also provides Emergency Medical Services to the community. This includes both emergency and non-emergency ambulance service to the residents of Montpelier and three surrounding towns which contract for that service. The Ambulance Service revenues provide a significant portion of the Department budget, thus allowing the City to maintain a quality emergency services in a cost effective manner.

Day to day operations of the Department are coordinated by a core of full-time Fire / Emergency Medical professionals. These firefighters maintain the department equipment, ensure personal capability through ongoing training, perform inspections, provide services to the public, present public education programs, and make the initial response to emergency incidents.

The Department manages two locations in the City. Emergency operations are run out of the downtown fire station. In addition, administrative services, ambulance billing, and non-emergency services, including walk-in blood pressure clinic, are located there. The second location is a training area located at the old "Stump Dump". This location is being developed to allow more effective practical training on a regular basis.

The Department has the following vehicles: two engine pumpers, one Tower Truck pumper, two ambulances and two utility vehicles.

Achieving a safe city is a result of joint effort of residents and the department. Residents can help protect the city from fire loss by continuing to carry out good fire safety practices in our homes and in the work place. Injuries and other property loss can be limited by driving automobiles in a safe defensive manner and safe use of power equipment.

The non-emergency phone number is 229-4913. ALL EMERGENCIES SHOULD BE REPORTED BY DIALING 911.
