Board of Abatement

The Board of Abatement is the only body authorized to abate any or all of the property taxes assessed by the city. The conditions under which the Board may grant an abatement are regulated by the State, click here for more information.

The Board of Abatement is comprised of the Justices of the Peace, the City Councilors, and the City Clerk and Treasurer. The Board meets as needed at City Hall to hear tax abatements.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Montpelier Board of Abatement will meet February 22, 2024, for the purpose of conducting hearings on requests to abate taxes, utility charges and other fees. The Board may continue hearings to other dates as needed. Proceedings begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center, First Floor, 58 Barre St., Montpelier, VT 05602, Applicants for abatement should appear and be ready to present evidence. If an applicant (or representative of the applicant) fails to appear at the hearing, the abatement request will be decided on the basis of the information submitted in the abatement request form. Meetings are open to the public. All abatement proceedings begin at 6:30 p.m. Meetings on January 18, 25 and February 8 will be held at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center, First Floor, 58 Barre St., Montpelier, VT 05602, and the meeting on February 1 will be held at the Montpelier High School Library, 5 High School Dr., Montpelier, VT 05602. Applicants for abatement should appear and be ready to present evidence.
