Route 2 State Paving Project
About the Project
The State will be paving Route 2 from Montpelier’s town line with Middlesex near Dairy Creme all the way to the town line with Berlin near Preston’s Kia past the roundabout. The route will follow Route 2 to State Street, then turn right to follow Bailey Ave across the bridge. It will then follow Memorial Drive to the Route 2/302 roundabout. The State awarded the bid to Pike Industries and is on schedule to start in the early summer of 2023.

MONTPELIER NH PC24(2): The project begins near the Bailey Ave intersection on U.S. 2 and progresses easterly for a distance of 2.701 miles to the Berlin/Montpelier Townline.
MONTPELIER STP PC24(3): Beginning in the City of Montpelier on U.S. 2 at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line and extending easterly along U.S. 2 for a distance of 1.767 miles to the Memorial Drive intersection. Beginning on U.S. 302 at the intersection of U.S. 2 and extending easterly along U.S. 302 for a distance of 0.832 miles to the Montpelier/Berlin town line.

May 26, 2023TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: In observance of Memorial Day, crews will end work by 12:00 p.m., noon, today, May 26. Crews will not be working Monday, May 29; they will return to the site on Tuesday, May 30, at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday May 30, through Saturday June 3, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic from Bailey Avenue to the start of the project limits at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line and at the Memorial Drive and Bailey Avenue Intersection. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Tuesday May 30, through Wednesday June 2, crews will begin preparing side roads for paving. Thursday June 1, through Saturday June 3, crews will begin paving the wearing coarse from Bailey Avenue to the start of the project limits at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line. Crews will begin installing drainage structures at the Memorial Drive and Bailey Avenue intersection. All work is weather dependent. |

Closure of Bailey Avenue Begins Today, Friday, May 19 until Monday, May 22
Beginning Friday, May 19, crews will begin reconstructing the railroad crossing at Bailey Avenue near the intersection with Memorial Drive. The work will require a weekend roadway and rail closure at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Memorial Drive. The intersection closure will be in effect from Friday, May 19, at 6:00 p.m. through Monday, May 22, at 6:00 a.m. A signed detour will be in place throughout the closure. Baily Avenue will be accessible to motorists from State Street. The signed detour route directs motorists from Memorial Drive to Main Street and then to State Street to access Bailey Avenue from State Street.
Motorists can access Montpelier High School and VSECU via State Street.
During the closure, crews will conduct digging, underdrain replacement, placing engineered gravel, paving, and laying new tracks and welding.

TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: Monday, May 15 through Friday, May 19, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., motorists can expect two traffic control packages with lane closures and alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. One traffic control package will be at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line to Bailey Avenue, and the other will move throughout the project limits. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Crews will begin ditching and slope stabilization activities throughout the project limits. Crews will be conducting structure adjustments from the Middlesex/Montpelier town line to Bailey Avenue. All work is weather dependent.
Throughout the week, crews will be preparing for the weekend closure of Bailey Avenue located at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Bailey Avenue. The closure will take place on Friday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. to Monday, May 22, at 7:00 a.m.

TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: Monday, May 8 through Friday, May 12, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from the Middlesex/Montpelier town line to Bailey Avenue. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Crews will begin shim paving, which is a thin (1/2 inch) layer of pavement and work on ditching from the start of the project at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line to Bailey Avenue.
April 28, 2023
TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: Monday, May 1 through Friday, May 5, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from the Middlesex/Montpelier town line to the intersection of Bailey Avenue and State Street. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone and as needed uniform traffic officers or flaggers will be present at the intersection of Baily Avenue and State Street to assist motorists.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Crews will begin milling from the Middlesex/Montpelier town line to the intersection of Bailey Avenue and State Street. Signal work may occur at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and State Street, most of this work will occur outside of the roadway.
April 21, 2023
Construction activity for the Montpelier U.S. 2 and U.S. 302 Resurfacing Projects began on April 20, 2023. Crews began installing advance warning and construction signage in the project area.
