[ARCHIVED] Deadline for permit applications under CURRENT zoning rules is Nov. 9

For Immediate Release

Nov. 6, 2017

Notice to homeowners and developers:

Deadline for permit applications under current zoning rules is Nov. 9

MONTPELIER – City planning officials are advising homeowners and developers who are considering projects to be aware that Nov. 9 is the last day to apply for zoning permits under the existing zoning and subdivision rules.

The City Council last week gave initial approval to new zoning rules, a proposal that now requires two public hearings prior to final passage. Those hearings are scheduled for Dec. 13 and 20. Under state law, once the first public hearing is warned, the new rules go into effect along with the existing zoning rules. As a result of that complex duplication, it can be difficult to get permits during the hearing process. Applicants should expect permitting delays during this transition period.

Planning Director Mike Miller said if you are currently considering a project, you should apply for your zoning permit by the end of business on Nov. 9 to guarantee you will be reviewed under the existing rules. Otherwise you may need to wait until after the proposed zoning is either approved or denied for your permit to be reviewed.
